A Meditation 05:29
Let it be nothing Let it be nothing special Same thing twice and again Let it go by like seasons Live as gently as forests breathing out Feel the ground Sturdy ‘neath the clouds of unknowing Let it be lonely Sitting alone, visualize it’s nothing

Open Wide 07:34
Thirty squares, unfolding into one block after one block... In a blink, you are grooming habits that will serve a goal that was never yours And your eyes, that you thought were open wide, focus on the mud Once dirt, stone and root, now thick cloud of compromise That's what happens when you're in a world that's not yours No rules except the ones you break for The compromise is dripping down your leg But fight or play, you will never win

Outside my window a willow weeps for me Soft, sad sounds reach my ears For the wind does not compete The trees hold me hand The clouds understand The porch light is my bright consciousness But someone turned it off... temporarily Or maybe they just dimmed it, just a little bit Inside my home now, no one weeps but me Harsh, lone sounds are my voice And the winds don’t dare compete The clouds are outside The trees wave goodbye I long to forget this and be with them But someone had to go and turn the light on Turn the porch light on

Walk, step, fall, bend, fly Walk, step, fall, bend, fly Walk, step, fall... Two hours long I've stared Up at my cracking ceiling Still there, I should get up soon Dress up and tie my shoes Lock up the door and run Here I go again, hope I catch this one Take me away to fun Take me away to the setting sun Take me away to the heat Let me in... Make me a bid, I'll try Make me a man, I'll go To you, hope I catch this one Take me to a train Take me to a rooftop so I'll feel the rain Take me by the hand Let me in Walk, step, fall, bend, walk, step, fall, bend

about

It all started in the kitchen of a house in the heart of Toronto. There was a jam space in the basement and five rooms rented out to a rotating cast of musicians. This was the scene of many late nights spent drinking glasses of red wine and talking about how the gig went. Between the players who lived there and the ones who just came to hang, a significant part of the young Toronto jazz community had shared moments listening to records, trading thoughts on music, and expressing their goals. One of those goals was to get a group of players together to record an album of standards. The idea was to go into the studio and try to capture the magic that happens when players who have never met get on a stage, choose a standard they all know, and then somehow make it come to life. Last year, we made that record.

After releasing 'Volume One' in 2016, we had seventeen musicians who were keen to do it again, only this time with original compositions. The ensemble grew with the addition of Jocelyn Barth and Nebyu Yohannes and then, with our crew of nineteen, the planning for 'Volume Two' began. For many of us, this album is our debut as composers, arrangers, lyricists, and producers. This newness brought an exciting energy to the project, and with the shared experience of making an album together already, we had developed a strong sense of community. There was collaboration, creativity, and input at every step of the process, which led to the album you're checkin' out right now.

Community is the prevailing theme of our project. Looking ahead, we hope that Collective Order will continue to become more inclusive and reflective of the musical and cultural diversity that Toronto has to offer.
